Enjoy what you do by Robert Nixon
You must really enjoy what you are doing. When you do, things go much more smoothly and you will not be dismayed when you make a mistake or have to overcome some stumbling block. You must be willing to admit your mistakes, learn from them, and move on. You have to take pride in your efforts and look on the positive side.
You must always follow your plan but leave your plan open for change. In the Army this is called 'the fog of war', in civilian life 'Murphy's Law' ( whatever can go wrong will ). This is because things will always happen, methods just don't produce, and business ventures may not 'pan out'. What may work for me, may not work for you and what may work for you, may not work for me.
In this business, you very seldom see results right away. It takes on the average at least two years for before many see concrete results in the correct direction from their efforts. This is also why you want your own domain. Even if your products or services change, your site is still there and you site promotional efforts will not be in vain. Your products or services are the content of your site, not your site. I use 'Frontpage' to edit my site and realize there are some other very good programs used by many that do the same thing, and you don't have to use any of them if you know HTML or use a template. But I enjoy learning how to do new things with Frontpage, have grown accustomed to it's quirks.
With my newsletter, I try and assist those that want to 'do it themselves' and have a limited budget by providing my subscribers with information, insight and encouragement. If you believe in what you are doing, then ninety per cent of the battle is won already.
What have I learned?
1. FREE sites If you don't want to get into the building process from the ground up, they may be the way you want to go as many of them have options for expansion where you can increase your control as you can afford it. These are then great for those not inclined for the more in depth tech stuff involved with site creation. You have to remember however, that these are just a level up from your 'referral' sites you may get for your products or services from their owners. The results for you are determined by the efforts of the owners as far as overall domain popularity.
2. FFA pages Are great for traffic IF you have your own. Like owning a safelist, however, they take time to maintain. They have to be listed with places that others use to promote their products ( such as submitters ) and are so often abused that the results from anything but traffic volume to your and from your domain are rare.
3. MLM's do indeed work IF you stay focused with what you really have to do, which is to get new sign ups and teach them how to do the same. Motivation is the name of the game there. Getting leads and following up on them are the key.
4. Meta tags, keywords and descriptions, along with the title ( which is what shows up on the 'browser' when some goes to your site ) are becoming much more critical in getting your site listed in the 'results' from internet search engines. If you do not pay for listing, don't become discouraged if you are not at or near the top of all listings. Change, up date these every few months if your not getting the results you desire from searches. Do searches for your 'main' page and find the engines that are listing you and your subpages, keep a list of them and re-check them every so often to insure your depth stays or grows.
5. Things like flashing banners, calendars, etc should never be on your main ( or entry page ) but on a sub page if you like them. YOUR banner should be the only one there. Remember, the top, the bottom and the sides are the most important parts of the page. What people first see determines how long they stay. The longer they stay the more likely they are to come back. The more they come back the more likely they are to purchase.
Conclusion:
I enjoy what I am doing. The feeling of attainment I get when I see my Alexa ranking going in the desired direction makes it all worthwhile to me. When I get new signups and see people purchasing I am delighted even more. I have to remain observant, however, and keep an eye on trends and yes, guess sometimes about what to do next. More important, I do a lot of research for information in order to learn from others too. I pass this along and enjoy that also.
In the last ten years the internet and what you have to do, how to do it and all that is involved has been like the 'Never ending story', that is things change all the time. If you want to be profitable you have to stay abreast and determine which of what is the best for you. This is really enjoyable when you see dreams realized when done honestly so you will have no regrets.
