There are reasons why reciprocal links may not be good. When trading links first started to be applied, it was a trade off between one site owner and another. The problem was that website owners were purchasing and taking advantage of thousands of reciprocal links for their website. This is altogether unnatural and it simply did not work out good for them.

But, why? The search engine bots soon discovered this scheme of link exchanges to get your site to rank better. They developed programs that would spot this problem and the fact that websites that were employing this large amount of reciprocal links in this way, ended up being ranked worse!
